Electric cars are on the rise, but one of the challenges to using them is that they need to be charged – and right now there aren’t that many charging stations around. Distribution of Electric Car Charging Stations
According to the US Department of Energy, there are now over 15,000 public charging stations nationwide. While that number keeps rising, it still falls far short of what’s necessary for electric cars for sale in san diego to become mainstream.

The Car Charging Database Project
This project was undertaken by the Union of Concerned Scientists to gain a better insight into how many cars were charging. Data pulled from the National Plug-In Electric Vehicle and Hydrogen Fueling Station Locator website revealed that there were approximately 90,000 electric cars in America as of December 2011, but only 16,000 plug-in electric vehicle charging stations – meaning the average car has access to 0.16 charging stations.
Additionally, researchers discovered that there are only approximately 2,000 public charging stations throughout America – not nearly enough to cover all counties combined.
Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Plan
The Union of Concerned Scientists reviewed a study done by Plug-In America which proposed building 1,000 public charging stations by 2015. Although their plan has been completed, it will take much longer than one year to implement it.
The Union of Concerned Scientists conducted an audit of the federal government’s infrastructure plans for charging stations. They discovered that $1 billion will be invested into 60 different projects, yet only 200 charging stations will be available by 2020.
The Union of Concerned Scientists has also created a map outlining the best locations to get free public charging stations. They plan on building 10,000 such stations over the next two decades.
Electrify America
This plan from the Department of Energy (DOE) seeks to accelerate plug-in electric vehicle adoption in America. They envision installing 40,000 public charging stations by 2020.
